Cybersecurity Consulting for Sydney SMBs

Cybersecurity consulting for Sydney and NSW businesses with 20 to 200 staff. We help SMB leaders decide what controls matter most, measure where you sit today, and build a defensible plan to get where you need to be. Fixed scope, no vendor steering, no uplift sold without evidence.

What does a cybersecurity consultant actually do?

A cybersecurity consultant works alongside your leadership and IT teams to make security decisions you can defend to your board, your cyber insurer, and your largest customers. For a 20 to 200 staff business, that usually means:

  • Mapping your current controls against a recognised framework (ASD Essential Eight, ISO 27001, NIST CSF, OAIC Privacy Act).
  • Identifying the gaps that create the most risk per dollar.
  • Giving you a scored report, a prioritised remediation roadmap, and the evidence to show your board.
  • Advising on vendor selection without steering you toward specific products.

A consultant does not run your security operations 24-7. That is a managed security services provider's job. A consultant does not patch your laptops or manage your Microsoft 365 licences. That is an MSP's job. What we do is figure out what should be done, measure what is being done, and build the case for what needs to change.

Consultant vs MSSP vs MSP vs in-house CISO

These four roles get confused regularly, especially inside 20 to 200 staff businesses. Short version:

  • MSP (managed service provider): patches your laptops, runs your backups, manages Microsoft 365 licences. Day-to-day IT support, some basic security tooling.
  • MSSP (managed security services provider): operates a 24-7 security operations centre on your behalf. Monitors logs, detects threats, responds to incidents.
  • In-house CISO or Head of Security: full-time employee owning your security programme end to end. Hard to justify under 500 staff.
  • Cybersecurity consultant (us): scoped engagements to measure, plan, and build defensible evidence. We do not operate your systems. We tell you what to operate and how to prove it.

For a Sydney SMB, you usually need a consultant first to figure out what matters, then an MSP for day-to-day IT, then possibly an MSSP once your risk profile demands 24-7 monitoring. An in-house CISO is a later problem.

Our approach

Three principles that shape every engagement:

  1. Every engagement produces something you can hand to a board, an insurer, or an auditor. A scored report with evidence, not a slide deck with aspirations.
  2. Fixed scope, fixed price, fixed timeline. You know what you are getting and what it costs before we start. No open-ended retainers.
  3. Framework-first. We align every engagement to a recognised standard. Your results are portable, auditable, and defensible years later.

Most engagements run 2 to 8 weeks. All deliverables are documented and version-controlled.

Where to start if you don't have a security programme yet

Three paths depending on where you sit today:

No framework, nothing documented, no evidence

Start with an Essential 8 Assessment. The ASD Essential Eight is the Australian baseline. We measure where you sit on the maturity scale across all eight mitigation strategies, give you a scored report, and a remediation plan ordered by effort and impact.

Working toward ISO 27001 certification

Start with ISO 27001 Readiness. We gap-assess your current practices against the ISO 27001 controls, give you a prioritised roadmap, and prepare the documentation your accredited certification body will expect.

Have controls but no evidence they work

Start with a Penetration Test or a Vulnerability Assessment. We validate that your controls catch what they are meant to catch. Both come with full methodology, evidence pack, and risk-ranked remediation.

Who we work with

We work with Sydney and NSW SMBs in the 20 to 200 staff range who:

  • Handle regulated data: financial, health, legal, government-adjacent.
  • Have an existing IT function: internal team, MSP, or outsourced IT.
  • Are preparing for a specific trigger: enterprise customer security review, cyber insurance requirement, ISO certification, Essential Eight compliance, incident recovery.

We do not work with businesses that want ongoing managed security operations (that is an MSSP), need laptops patched or Microsoft 365 managed (that is an MSP), are looking to resell security tools, or want unscoped retainers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why Sydney specifically?
We are a Sydney-based consultancy. Local regulatory context is familiar, travel is simple for NSW engagements, and most of our proof will be Sydney-based. We work with clients across Australia; the methodology is the same.
How quickly do we start?
Discovery call within 48 hours of enquiry. Scoping call within 3 to 5 business days of the discovery call to confirm requirements. Engagement starts the Monday after you countersign the scoping document. Delivery timelines vary by service and are set in the scoping document itself.
Do you work with our MSP?
Yes. We work alongside your existing IT support partner. We tell them what needs to change; they implement. If you do not have an MSP, we can recommend options.
What does it cost?
Fixed-price engagements, scoped to your specific environment. All prices confirmed in writing before you sign.
Can you run our security operations?
No. We do not operate security tooling day-to-day. If you need 24-7 monitoring, we can scope what you need and help you find the right MSSP.
Can you help with an active incident right now?
If you are in active incident response, call the ACSC on 1300 CYBER1 first. We do not offer first-responder incident response. We can help with the post-incident review, lessons learned, and strengthening your controls so it does not happen again.
Can you help with cybersecurity insurance applications?
Yes. Cyber insurance applications are a common trigger for an Essential 8 Assessment. The scored report maps directly to the Essential Eight questions most Australian cyber insurance providers ask on renewal.

Next step

If you run a Sydney SMB and you are not sure where to start, the right first move is a 20-minute scoping conversation. We will ask what triggered the search, map your current state in rough terms, and tell you honestly whether a consultant is the right starting point or whether you need something else entirely. Email secure@infosecsphere.com or request an assessment through any of the service pages above.
